IBM invented the carbon nanotube chip

According to media reports, IBM researchers have found how to use carbon nanotubes manufacturing micro-chip method, this result allows us to manufacture more powerful chip, making the surface computer, injectable chip possible. "At the molecular level, the wafers produced can, in theory, be as much as six to ten times faster than existing ones, and eventually nanotechnology can achieve a thousand times faster wafer speed," said a spokesman for the IBM Labs team.

As early as October 2, 2015, Science published a report, the report pointed out that IBM scientists have found a breakthrough in the transistor contact technology, which is expected to replace the existing silicon power Crystal. Which launched a carbon nanotubes technology research and development.

This kind of nano-sized wafers can solve the problem that the calculation of the portable terminal is not enough, and the carbon nanotube chip can be 1000 times higher than the prior art in the same size.

Carbon nanotube is actually a new type of semiconductor materials, its circuit properties than the current physical bottleneck to meet the silicon. Carbon nanotubes have many natural properties that are superior to silicon, and are particularly well suited for building nanoscale transistors on thousands of atomic scales, where electrons can also be transferred more easily than silicon transistors to achieve faster data transfer. The shape is also a good choice for making transistors on atomic scale.

Carbon wafers with less than 10 nanometers are much more efficient than silicon wafers as switches. At the point of contact, the contact point in the wafer is the control valve between the current and the semiconductor channel. As the transistor shrinks, the resistance at the contact point increases, resulting in performance degradation. The IBM is to overcome the contact impedance problem, in the metal electrode and carbon nanotubes to form a high-quality between the contact points, even in smaller chips can still maintain performance, but also reduce power consumption.

From the two aspects of materials science and computer science, the role of carbon chips is indeed greater than the silicon wafer, but it also means that the current commercial value of carbon chips is much lower than the silicon wafer. The reason lies in the manufacturing process. Carbon nanotubes were made by George Tulevski, an IBM materials scientist who invented the same method as stacking wood to "induce" the carbon tube to form the desired structure, or even to understand the growth of a wafer. Let's look at the silicon wafer production process. Although it looks complicated, but in fact much easier than the carbon tube chip, but also with a lower cost. This is why carbon nanotube chips are of low commercial value.

At present, the demand for computation in the IOT field is increasing with the tight connection between end and end. But the carbon nanotube technology because of its cost reasons, in the short term is difficult to become mainstream. According to the industry to judge, the first use of carbon nanotubes technology should be medical and cockpit two major areas.

And Toshiba, the same chip for IBM is also the main business. IBM now focuses on the construction of smart city-related projects, including systems, networks and infrastructure, and so on. If the technology of carbon nanotube chip can be improved in the yield and production efficiency, then for IBM, which is more or less in promoting the main business.

But now it seems that this technology is still not large-scale. After all, all the new technologies, especially the breakthrough technology with the change of the times, will take some time to settle down.
